Nobody Needs a Heritage Film

Nobody needs what I sell, and that’s why it works. Nobody needs a Ferrari either.

Nobody Needs a Heritage Film

You know, I was thinking… Nobody needs what I sell, and that’s why it works.

Nobody needs a Ferrari. Nobody needs a Rolex. Nobody needs a bottle of wine that costs more than a mortgage payment. You can get from A to B in a Camry. You can check the time on your phone. You can drink a $12 bottle from H-E-B and get just as tipsy.

But people don’t buy Ferraris to get from A to B. They buy them because they want to feel something. Because owning one says something about who they are, what they’ve built, what they believe they deserve. The car is a symbol. The watch is a statement. The wine is a ritual.

Heritage Films is the same thing.

Nobody needs a documentary film of their family. The stories exist in memory. The photos are in a box somewhere. Grandpa will probably be fine without a film crew showing up to his living room. Life will go on.

After years of doing this, I’ve learned that the families who choose to make a Heritage Film are making a declaration. They’re saying, this family matters. These stories matter. This person’s voice matters enough to preserve it professionally, permanently, and beautifully.

It’s a want. A deep, powerful want that feels an awful lot like a need.

The business lesson took me a while to see. Positioning yourself as a need is a trap when you’re actually selling desire. If I compete on need, I lose. Because nobody needs this. But if I compete on the emotional weight of what it means to hear your grandfather’s voice after he’s gone?

There’s no competition. We are the best in the world at that.

Jean-Noël Kapferer and Vincent Bastien wrote a book called The Luxury Strategy. They call their rules the anti-laws of marketing. Don’t sell utility. Sell meaning. Don’t lower the price to increase demand. Raise the experience to justify the price. Don’t chase customers. Attract the ones who already understand.

Ferrari doesn’t run sales. Rolex doesn’t discount. Heritage Films doesn’t beg.

We make something rare, something personal, something that gains value the longer it exists. The families who get it, get it. And the ones who don’t? They weren’t our people anyway.

Heritage Films produces personal documentary films for families across the United States and the world. You don’t need a Heritage Film. But you might want one more than you realize.
